Mortimer Bixby’s Marriage Proposal

Mortimer Bixby fell in love with an opera singer.
She was one half of a pair of singing sisters.
Each was for the other a total dead ringer,
But only one wanted to make him her mister

Mortimer loved only one of the two,
But not the one that loved him back.
What could a poor lovesick singer do–
But nudge him to make a better match?

When Morty proposed in the dim backstage light
The one that loved him took the place of the other,
And he didn’t realize that something wasn’t right
Til he rose from his knee and saw who was there.

When he knew that he had proposed to the wrong sister
He took out a knife and he did not linger
But in one slice cut off the ring along with the finger,
And offered the ring to the other singer!

She accepted his proposal and let him kiss her–
Not because she loved him–she just hated her sister.
